Tourist numbers in Abu Dhabi climbed in 2019, thanks to a number of high-profile events happening in the emirate.

Hospitality consultancy STR said the UAE’s capital enjoyed a “sensational year” for tourism.

The magic number for Abu Dhabi places to stay was revenue per available room (RevPar), a standard industry measure to gauge a hotel’s performance.

This increased by 7.2% in Abu Dhabi to AED 321 in 2019, as occupancy levels grew 2.3% to 73.4%.

Philip Wooller, STR’s area director for the Middle East and Africa, flagged up the annual Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix, the city hosting the Asian Cup in January and February’s visit by Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church.

An increase in visitor numbers brought with it a financial boost for the industry. Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi said hotel revenue for the entire emirate increased by 3.5% to Dh1.84 billion in the final quarter of 2019.
