Abu Dhabi renames two areas and an island

A change is as good as a rest, so the saying goes… but the merging and and name changing in this case are actually in aid of Abu Dhabi’s heritage.
Soon you are going to be seeing new names on road signs as you drive down the capital’s highways and byways.
Two areas in Abu Dhabi have been merged and an island renamed in a bid to preserve and promote the emirate’s heritage.
Al Maqta and Bawabat Abu Dhabi will merge and will now be known as Rabdan, after Founding Father Sheikh Zayed’s horse, and one of the horses of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The name fittingly represents strength, courage and fearlessness, and reflects the UAE’s interest in thoroughbreds.
A tweet by Abu Dhabi Media Office outlined how the renaming is “under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to “embody the importance of heritage in naming cities and areas across the emirate”.

Ras Ghurab Island is set to be renamed Al Aliah, meaning the “honourable one”. It also refers to the upper part of a spear or sword and reflects the area’s elevated position.
