8 Ways to Celebrate Father's Day While Social Distancing

As with everything so far in 2020, Father's Day looks a little different this year. No matter where you are in the country, social distancing still reigns supreme, so while you may not get to do classic Father's Day fare like, say, go to a ball game, there's still plenty of other dad-appreciation fun to be had! From family movie night to indoor golf, here are eight ideas to celebrate Father's Day in 2020.

1. Make a card

Father's Day isn't Father's Day without a handmade card, right? Sign your kids up for an online class that'll help them make one (we recommend Creativities with EEK and Young Art Lessons), get inspo from Instagram, or just let them wing it—any way you go, Dad will love it.

2. Make a craft

You gotta make a present to go along with that card! Follow these parents' lead and paint portraits of Dad on rocks, beautify a brand-new toolset, or go with a classic and make a popsicle stick frame (with a cute photo inside, of course!). Or, leave it to the professionals and sign your kids up for this "Batman Dad" drawing class!

3. See a show

Entertain the whole family with a virtual show! On Sunday, legendary kids' musician Laurie Berkner is hosting an online live, interactive children's concert and Kids 'N Comedy is holding a (loving) virtual roast of good ole dad.

4. Play an indoor game

If you can't go outside in your city quite yet, don't fret! There're tons of ways to celebrate indoors. Have a family bonding night with these board games (your gift can be letting dad win), set up an indoor bowling alley (or golf course, depending on his interests), or let him live out his Mission Impossible dreams by making a "laser maze"—who says playtime is just for kids?

5. Take the fun outside

If you have a backyard, great! Pitch a tent and have an at-home "camping" trip, complete with BBQ (if that's Dad's thing) and S'mores, play Dad's sport of choice (soccer, football, Capture the Flag....the sky's the limit), have a family Tug of War or Dodgeball sesh. You get the idea.

6. Indulge in a special meal

This could be brunch, lunch, breakfast or dinner—and even homemade or takeout from your favorite spot! Whatever you do, make it a Father's Day event. To make it extra fun, you can have kids create "menus" and play waiter to you!

7. Have a family movie night

Okay, so dads may not get to watch faves like Die Hard or The Godfather (at least while kids are awake), but there are plenty of dad-friendly movies that kids will like, too! Back to the Future is perfect for older kids, as is Indiana Jones; younger kids might enjoy watching kids' movies that Dad liked when he was young! The Goonies, The Land Before Time....who knows? They might become your kids' favorite movies, too! If they're open in your city, you might want to check out your local drive-in theaters that are perfect for social distancing.

8. Wish family well virtually

If you can't be there in person, take advantage of technology to wish your extended family a happy Father's Day, too. If you're tired of Zoom, try Houseparty, which lets you play fun bonding games like trivia and Pictionary!
