Where to see films for free in Abu Dhabi
Cinema trips in the capital don’t have to be a budget- blowing experience. Here’s a round-up of where you can see film for free in Abu Dhabi.
Cinema Space
You’re unlikely to find the latest CGI blockbuster at this cultural space on Saadiyat Island. Instead, at this volunteer-run initiative, there’s a lovely mix of world cinema, restored classics and family-friendly programmes.
Screening on Sunday (9th February) is a double feature Oscar special, starting from 6pm. First film up is a surprise, but the clue is that it’s followed by nominated director Bong Joon-ho’s The Host, presented in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Centre.

Umm al Emarat Park
The family-orientated Cinema in the Park is well into its winter season, with double bills every weekend. Admission to Umm Al Emarat Park is AED 10, but that covers movie time too, plus the chance to stroll one of Abu Dhabi’s oldest urban parks.
Showings are Thursday to Saturday at 6.30pm and 8.30pm and this weekend anyone with a yen to chortle at Trolls, Boss Baby or The Secret Life of Pets 2 will not be disappointed.

All around Abu Dhabi
The first-ever Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival brings films flagging up environmental issues to pop-up screenings around the capital.
While the festival’s hub is Manarat Al Saadiyat, screenings are also scheduled for schools around Abu Dhabi, on Etihad flights and even at the giant fish at Masdar Central Park!
Set to show are Wasted!, produced by legendary chef Anthony Bourdain ), the feature-length documentary The Story of Plastic, Youth Unstoppable, which follows the evolution of the Global Youth Climate Movement (pictured above, right to left).
